WHY I WROTE: THE JUDGE; Finally breaks down and tells the truth!

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a do-over in life? I mean you did something you regret doing or something you didn’t do and feel you should have. Then you wondered how your life would be now, taking the opposite course or going in the opposite direction? How would your life be different if that change had taken place? I wondered what the change would look like. I decided to examine that very change. Suppose you were married with children, well with one child who was your baby. You want only the best for your child. That’s exactly what you gave your child. You had plenty of money and you spoiled her rotten. You could definitely afford to give her the best home in the best neighborhood. She had a wonderful wardrobe that was updated to the latest fashion trend. She attended excellent schools. New cars to drive and people to drive her wherever she wanted to go. Before you knew it, your daughter grew up. She learned to say no. The biggest no she told you when you asked her not to be gay. And to leave the young woman you caught her with […]

IF YOU KNEW YOU WERE GAY…

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
“First of all, I am not writing this note to start a fight with you, or to judge you. It is just a question that has been on my mind. From what I have read, there is a school of thought throughout the LGBT community that being gay is not a choice that gay people make. It is something that they are born with, and they know from a very early age that they are gay. It is not something that they can turn on or off like a light. If this is true, why did you marry me? If you knew in your heart that you were gay, wasn’t marrying me and then having a child with me wrong?” Those were the words in my ex-husband’s email that got me to thinking. I wondered how I might answer him. This should be easy, I thought. I’m a writer. I use words to present my arguments and defend myself, don’t I? I answered my own question with a loud YES; I can do this. Jump forward six months. It was late August, hot and humid, but I still hadn’t answered ex-husband’s email. I asked a couple of friends what to […]

COMING OUT AT 47

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I read this article from a worried parent years ago. I found the question interesting enough to write about. The mother says, “My sixteen-year-old son told me that he is gay. What should I do about it?” Today, I’d add my own experience of coming out as a lesbian. I wasn’t as young as that mother’s son was when he said, “Guess what, Mom? I’m gay.” Nope, that wasn’t me. I was forty-seven years old before I finally admitted to me that I was gay and then I admitted it to my family. Question: Isn’t 47 a little old to discover one’s orientation? Shouldn’t a person know before they reach 30 who or what they like? At 47, a person has lived over half her life in the shadows and maybe with the wrong gender as well. How is a major life change possible at that age? Permit me to explain my particular situation. I’m a Baby Boomer. When I grew up, young women were just beginning to flex their muscles. They were thinking about working in non-traditional jobs and considered living non-traditional lives. Most of the women I knew when I was a kid wore traditional clothes to represent […]

THE JUDGE; finally breaks down and tells the truth!

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Dr. Cynthia Singleton grows curious about her new next-door neighbor, who looks so familiar to her. During an early morning jog, Cynthia finds Judge Gideon badly beaten and near death on the local high school’s running track. After saving the judge’s life, Cynthia meets his family at the hospital. She realizes his daughter, Evangeline Updike-Humphreys is the same woman she had a summer fling while in college, decades ago. She has no idea how angry Evangeline still is about their broken relationship. When Evangeline angrily refuses her medical help, she debates whether to continue to treat the judge. She wonders who tried to kill the judge. Why kill the judge and what she can do about it? Can she and Evangeline have more than a summer fling with each other? Can they overcome their differences and the lies they’ve heard over decades? Will their families, friends and the sheriff stop interfering with their relationship? Will Cynthia and Evangeline finally get together and live happily ever after? The Judge final breaks down and tells the truth! is available for pre-order now on Kindle, Draft 2 Digital and Smashwords. The release date is 6/2/25. Memorial Day Tribute

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
When I was a child, I remember how my father would drive my siblings and I from the country town where we lived to his hometown of Lorraine on Memorial Day. Sometimes, we’d go to Elyria Ohio and visit his other people too. My father never said why we were going to his hometown on Memorial Day just that we were going, and we’d better get ready or else. The ride there, which was several hours, was usually pretty quiet. My sister, brother and I would fall asleep, or we would count cars. We knew better than to argue in my father’s car. Sibling arguments could result in my father pulling over to side of the road, removing his belt then whaling on one or all of us. That threat encouraged us to maintain our silences or quietly count all of the out of state license plates we saw along the way. I looked forward to the drive my father’s hometown for two reasons. My favorite aunt would ride with us or meet us there and the food in Lorraine and Elyria was great. I loved my Aunt Sadie. She was the only person I knew who could tell my […]

WHY I WROTE: Dutch Chocolate11: One Abernathy sister discovers something? Is it love or hate?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Years ago, long before the girl power, Black Girl Magic and the Me-Too movements, I watched Angela Jolie in the movie Laura Croft Tomb Raider. I was in love with movies again. I thought. Wow! Finally, an attractive woman in a lead role where she carries everything. She played the role of an adventurer, normally inhabited by a man. Think Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series or Nicholas Cage in the National Treasure series, both men played adventurer roles. Their movies were quite popular with moviegoers. While watching Tomb Raider, years later, I thought to myself. How come there aren’t more action movies like this with women or minorities in main roles? Why aren’t they the stars of show? Is it because nobody would pay to see movies like this? Then I thought. I’d go see it. I bet I could find plenty of other folks would too. I decided I’d write a series of books about a Black lesbian with code name Dutch Chocolate. She has a background in NYPD as a sergeant in East Harlem, before joining the army and going to the Middle East to work in Intel. She returns to work in one of NYPD’s […]

THE GOD THING

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve been thinking a lot about God lately. I’m not sure exactly why, but I’ve been doing it. For example, two weeks ago, I went out to move my car from one side of the street to the other side. In New York City, we have something called Alternate Side of the Street Parking. Particularly in Manhattan, good legal parking spots are worth a car’s weight in gold. Even bad illegal spots are worth something until the traffic agents or the police discover them. Depending on the side of the street, the day of the week, and time of day, a car has to be moved or the owner risks a ticket, a tow, or both. I saw two older Black women in long-sleeved dresses that almost touched their ankles crossing the street as I double-parked. I immediately thought of old-school church sisters. The only thing the two sisters were missing were their Sunday-go-to-meeting church hats. They did carry copies of their religious booklets, face-out against their chests as if the papers could shield them against the sinning world they were entering. I watched the two women for a long while. They both took bench seats in the park across […]

Dutch Chocolate11: One Abernathy sister discovers something? Is it love or hate?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Can two very lonely women, bar owner Phoebe Abernathy, and wealthy heiress Redmond Wallace, rid themselves of their ghosts long enough to see each other as they really are? When their vision clears, what will the two women see. Will they still find each other attractive? If they find each other attractive what will they do about their attraction? How will their attraction for each other effect those around them, the best friend Dominique Moon, the legal guardians Laverne Watts & Cordelia Hart and Faye Mercer the homecare nurse)? Will the folks around the couple be happy for them or try to break them up? That’s still a tossup, that will likely keep the couple apart. Redmond’s family never liked Phoebe the bar owner from day one. While Phoebe’s people encourage any relationship Phoebe the hermit has with any woman. Find out what happens next. PRIVATE NIGHTMARES & PUBLIC ANGELS

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I had been married nearly two years when the first assault happened. I’d married the man of my dreams. The man I thought I loved. He was older than I was but what a fun guy. We enjoyed doing things together. We went on vacations together. We exercised together. We wanted children together. We loved the same action and western movies. We read the same books and magazines. We’d go grocery shopping together and consider it a fun thing to do. We loved building stuff together. We loved getting lost in lumber yards or Sears tool & tire sections or at New York’s Annual Auto show. We even watched the same television shows together. Little did I know once we were married, he’d still hangout at bars on the weekend as if he was still single. When I washed his clothes, I’d check his pockets first for loose change and then for packs of cigarettes. I’d always find slips of paper or matchbook covers from bars with women’s names and numbers on them. We never argued about his extra-curricular activities.  Instead, we debated mine. I felt what was good for the goose was good for the gander too. I said […]
