WHAT BLACK HISTORY MONTH MEANS TO ME

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I read an article in a recent Southern Poverty Law Center1 newsletter that mentioned a survey SPLC2 conducted targeting approximately 1000 senior high schooler’s knowledge about American slavery. The SPLC survey also involved social studies teachers and reviewed the history textbooks they used. This is what the survey found. Would you believe only 8% of the high school seniors surveyed could identify slavery as the central cause of the Civil War? It gets worse. The Washington Post read the same survey and summarized it by saying this: 68% of the students didn’t known slavery was formally ended by a Constitutional amendment. 22% of the students could identify how provisions in the Constitution gave advantages to slaver holders. 44% students knew that slavery was legal in all colonies during the American revolution. The survey also evaluated ten popular history textbooks. Even the best history textbook score was 70 points out of 100 points based on a rubric of what should be in a history book about American slavery. The remaining textbooks accumulated 46 points out of 100 points. Why am I telling you all this when Black History Month is half over? 1 I donate to Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) […]

In the fifth book of the Dutch Chocolate series, Somebody to Love Me, FBI Undercover Agent Zita Fernandez has been depressed since her Aunt Marjorie’s murder six years ago. Neither Special Agent Sharpe nor Agent Fernandez wants to ask for Dutch’s help. Both women are worried that this will take Dutch backwards to an uncomfortable time in her life when she was in love with Zita’s aunt. Can Zita deal with the consequences of her mistakes? WHY I WROTE: SANTA BABY, Two studs & baby makes three

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve always liked the movie Three Men & A Baby. The premise of the movie is this. Three handsome single womanizing men who are confirmed bachelors find a baby girl left on their doorstep. The men are thrown into a tizzy. They don’t know which one of them is father or if one of them is the father. They don’t know how to change a diaper let alone how feed and care for a baby girl who can’t walk or talk yet. Each man learns what the baby girl’s cries mean. They must learn how to change diapers. How to feed her. How to bath her. How to buy and dress her in baby clothes. And how to entertain the baby girl and stop her cries. By the time the mother returns to claim the child, all three men don’t want the little girl to leave. They have fallen in love with the little girl. They want to raise her as their own child. Once the one of the men admits he’s the father, the remaining two men convince the mother to move in with them so they can raise the child together. I always thought the story idea would […]

I THOUGHT I KNEW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I thought I knew what happens when we die. After all, I was familiar with death, since I’d experienced it at a young age. I was around eleven years old when my grandmother died at seventy-nine. The medical examiner’s records said she died of a heart attack, cardiac arrest. The report didn’t say that my grandmother was the main speaker at a church sisters’ meeting. The topic was Africa. As she was speaking at the front of the church, she felt funny. The sisters told my mother how my grandmother grabbed her chest and told the closest sister she needed to rest because she felt so tired. She managed to sit down in one of the front pews, never to rise again. So yes, I thought I knew death. When I was twelve, I bought a puppy from the local dog pound with five dollars I’d found fluttering the breeze, finally landing on a dirt should of a main road. My kid brother, big sister, and I were walking home from the library. It was the best five-dollar gift I’d ever spent on me. I called the puppy Lady, named after the female dog in Disney’s movie Lady & The […]

DECEMBER OF SORROWS

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve been thinking a lot about God lately. Unlike earlier this year, this time I know why. Permit me to explain as best I can. Towards the end of December, is said to be the birth date of God’s son Jesus. It’s a wonderful time for amazing celebrations of his birth to a relatively poor couple. His foster father Joseph was an unemployed carpenter and his birth mother Mary was a simple housewife. For me and my family December has been a month of deep sorrow and regret. My father died on December 29, 2001. My sister only two years older than me, died in the early morning on December 12, 2017. I miss them both so much and wish they were both still here. At times, it’s difficult for me to celebrate Christmas or New Year’s Eve with their deaths hanging over my head like a permanent dark mistletoe. I try to remember with a great deal of fondness, celebrating Christmas when I was a child and now missing family members were alive and well. Back then, my mother loved this time of year. She hung ribbons full of hundreds of Christmas cards in the hallway by the front […]

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In Book 8 of the Forever Woman series, normally cool, calm, and collected Percy Burnette is in trouble. Her life is falling apart. After she assaulted one of her best friends and shot her ex-fiancée, she is losing control of her world. All she feels is a burning rage. She has no idea where it’s coming from or how to stop her negative behavior toward people that she thought she loved. While awaiting arraignment within the city’s correction system, she has a one-night stand with her cellmate, a woman she’s known for less than 24 hours. Before entering the corrections system, she conducts an affair with her arresting officer, Detective Mary Bethune (MB) Collins. Now Percy has done her time in the corrections system. She suspects MB of cheating with one of the rookie detectives she’s required to train. However, MB is not playing around. MB is falling in love with Percy but doesn’t know how to tell her. They had agreed at the beginning of the relationship they were in it for companionship and safe sex. Percy means more than that and MB wants to show her with a special gift of love. Will Percy accept this life-changing gift, […]
