WHY I WROTE: CAN TRUE LOVE COME TWICE IN A LIFETIME?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I wanted to write a book about woman discovers a woman who looks exactly like her dead wife. How would she react? The woman, wealthy realtor, Amelia Roberts grows curious about her dead wife’s body double and follows her. She learns the woman Brett Mc Kinsey works as an art restorer for a small firm. Unbeknown to Brett, her employer is going bankrupt. Brett will be losing her job and her health insurance in 6 months. Only the owners know the issue and have not told their employees. Amelia continues to spy on Brett, hoping to find a way to help her. Amelia wonders if finding her dead wife’s look-alike is a good thing for her? Can she see Brett Mc Kinsey for who she really is and accept her for being different than her dead wife, Ruby? One night, Amelia manages rescue Brett from a fall in the street and the result is a broken ankle. Amelia now has an excuse to bring Brett home and does. Amelia is a true control freak, ignores Brett’s protests about invading her privacy. She uses her medical friends to reset Brett’s broken ankle and examine the baby growing inside her. She finds […]

IT’S HALLOWEEN & MY 8th ANNIVERSARY, TOO!

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I caught the writing bug but I needed to find my voice. I needed to write better since I kept getting pesky rejection letters from publishers I admired. I had shoe boxes filled with them. I did what most writers do. I went back to school. I enrolled in courses at the New School, the 92nd Street Y and Gotham Writer’s Workshop. I joined several writing groups as well. By then I had quite a portfolio of short stories, novels, novellas and even a workplace memoir. When my first publishing deal didn’t work out, it took me eight years to finally decide maybe I could become my own publisher. By then there were all kinds of helpful free publishing services such as Amazon’s Kindle and Createspace, Nook, Kobo and Apple’s IBooks. I decided to self-publish at a perfect time. I was leaving my job of 40 years in July of 2014. I couldn’t sit at home all day twiddling my thumbs all day. I needed to do something to fill my time. I tried volunteering. I did it for six or seven months; but I needed something more to fill my heart and my soul. I decided to publish my […]

THE GOD THING

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve been thinking a lot about God lately. I’m not sure exactly why, but I’ve been doing it. For example, two weeks ago, I went out to move my car from one side of the street to the other side. In New York City, we have something called Alternate Side of the Street Parking. Particularly in Manhattan, good legal parking spots are worth a car’s weight in gold. Even bad illegal spots are worth something until the traffic agents or the police discover them. Depending on the side of the street, the day of the week, and time of day, a car has to be moved or the owner risks a ticket, a tow, or both. I saw two older Black women in long-sleeved dresses that almost touched their ankles crossing the street as I double-parked. I immediately thought of old-school church sisters. The only thing the two sisters were missing were their Sunday-go-to-meeting church hats. They did carry copies of their religious booklets, face-out against their chests as if the papers could shield them against the sinning world they were entering. I watched the two women for a long while. They both took bench seats in the park across […]

TRYING NOT TO THINK ABOUT CANCER

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I was re-reading through my notes about a workplace memoir that I’d written and published through a small independent publisher in 2008. I’d been collecting materials to write a book about where I worked and the heart-felt journey I’d made while working there. While reading my notes, I found something that captured my interest. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to add the information to the second edition of my workplace memoir, Mr. Jefferson’s Piano & Other Central Harlem Stories, or simply write another short story to post on my blog. When I opted to write a short story, suddenly, I traveled back in time. According to my workplace diary, Monday, October 13, was Columbus Day and a civil service holiday. Today was Tuesday, October 14, 1997. I read the diary note I’d written to my partner. I am so sorry. I know I promised I’d go to the PTA meeting but I can’t.  As I read that note, I remembered thinking how I couldn’t say what I felt. Instead, for the past five weeks, I pretended I wasn’t worried about a damned thing. At forty-nine, I’d gotten my routine mammogram five weeks ago. I always hated the way that […]

Why I wrote: Chapbook4: Lauren’s Quartet of Love, Taylor

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In 2006, I decided to write this book about a woman, a police officer who has a case that haunts her. She’s trying to find a missing teenager. At the time I started writing the story, I hadn’t envisioned a serial set of chapbooks. I thought my story would be about a NYPD lieutenant and her partner searching the countryside in the hope of finding a female runaway alive and unhurt. A second one of my characters is also a runaway. Taylor Cobb is hitchhiking to the city. She’s heading for the city to get away from everything. She feels guilty about her lover’s, Sunny York’s murder. She thinks she could have and should have prevented it. She knows her classmates hate her because she likes girls and she dared to testify against pedophile Jack Donaldson. She thinks her mother hates her for the same reason. On road she accepts a ride and gets kidnapped. She is forced into a sex ring along with other much younger girls and she becomes their protector. Two other characters are police officers, former lieutenant Lauren Parker. She feels guilty she couldn’t prevent Sunny York’s death. So guilty about Sunny York’s death, she loses […]

WHY I WROTE: Chapbook3: Lauren’s Quartet of Love, Martine

In 2006, I decided to write this book about a woman, a police officer who has a case that haunts her. She’s trying to find a missing teenager. At the time I started writing the story, I hadn’t envisioned a serial set of chapbooks. I thought my story would be about a NYPD lieutenant and her partner searching the countryside in the hope of finding a female runaway alive and unhurt. I decided to make another one of my main characters, a third police officer named Martine Sanchez. Lauren’s search for Taylor Cobb which began in upstate New York and takes them along the I-95 corridor heading southwest and ends in New Mexico. She and Reggie sense Taylor is somewhere in New Mexico, they just need a little help in finding her. One of Reggie’s contacts suggests reaching out to the NM police department and a sergeant who works there. Martine Sanchez is an ambitious sergeant with New Mexico police force who wants to be sheriff before she turns forty. She meets the two former NYC police officers (Lauren & Reggie) while playing an undercover role as a sex worker in a rundown bar. She’s so good at role playing […]

WHY I WROTE: ChapBook2: Lauren’s Quartet of Love, Althea

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
lost her pride, her gun, her badge and the 17-year job she loves so much. She’s spent the past 12 months under house arrest at Althea’s place. She’s been sentenced to perform community service and attended anger management classes. She’s paid Jack Donaldson medical bills. On the bright side she’s developed somewhat of a romantic relationship with Althea; deep affection for her dog Eddie and the old man Lucas Daily, her next-door neighbor. When Lauren hears Taylor Cobb ran way, she decides she must find her. Reggie joins her. Their search for Taylor begins in upstate New York in her hometown of Lorraine. The search takes them along the I-95 corridor of New York and New Jersey, heading southwest and ends in New Mexico. Along the way, the officers undergo as many changes as the victims. By the time I finished writing this story, I had written four serials. I named the chapbooks after a main characters in each story. The result is Chapbook2: Lauren’s Quartet of Love, Althea. I do hope you like the results. Lauren’s Quartet of Love: ChapBook2, Althea is available for pre-order 3/16/22 on Kindle and Smashwords. The release date is 4/02/22. Thanks for reading, BL […]
