WHY PEOPLE LIE

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
For most of my life, I’ve been curious about something that seems to be a human phenomenon. Little kids do it. Teenagers do it. And adults do it. Even Disney characters (think Pinocchio) do it. It’s called lying. Lately I find myself wondering why people do it. Most people make such a mess of it. They tell whoppers that can so easily be uncovered. In this age of cellphone videos, body cams, social media, and information breaches, who doesn’t know your business? To me, lying seems worthless or at least more work than it’s worth. Yet people still do it. And I keeping asking myself, why do people lie? Experts Victoria Talwar and Kang Lee say that there are three types of lies. The first one is called a primary lie. This type of lie is told to hide what the teller did but fails to consider the mental state of the listener. Children as young as two and as old as four tell these kinds of lies. By the time children are four, they learn to tell secondary lies. These lies are more plausible. The teller has learned through trial and error to shape the lie to the listener’s […]

WHY ARE APOLOGIES SO DIFFICULT TO MAKE?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Years ago, I had friend I was always trying to impress. She was in school earning her masters when I first met her. After twenty years of dancing around the edges of higher education, I returned to school for my BA first and then my masters, inspired by her quest for higher education. We grew close. We shared our hopes and dreams of the future. She wanted to be a lawyer, then a civil court judge. I wanted to be school psychologist until I learned how long my journey would be. I calculated I’d be a year or so from retirement before I met my career goal. In a particularly revealing moment, she told me how guilty she felt when her kid sister died in a fire and she couldn’t rescue her. I told her about suffering spousal abuse literally at the hands of my former husband. My tale of woe would come back to haunt me. My friend began to tease me about my domestic abuse. She made offhand, mean jokes about getting hit. The first time she did it, I ignored it, which was my mistake. The next time she said something offhand about spousal abuse, I stopped […]

CRAZY IS AS CRAZY DOES Part 2

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I just saw a photo in the Washington Post showing some of the folks protesting the lock downs in their states. Actually, I saw two photos of the protesters. One photo was of adults in Michigan carrying signs and screaming insults at the governor for continuing the lockdowns when the protestors wanted the state to re-open or “liberated.” They were chanting. “Lock Her Up. Lock Her Up!” Meaning they want to recall the governor for not re-opening the state for business. But for me that wasn’t the most disturbing part of the protests. It was seeing a still photo of young children who looked to be under 10 or 11 at the protest rally. They were gathered in a tightly knit group with no physical distancing and no protective gear in sight. I believe 45 knows exactly what he is doing and so do we all if we think logically about what 45 is doing. He is running a re-election campaign. Every time we citizens see 45 giving corona updates; every time 45 opens his mouth; every time he tweets, he’s running a re-election campaign whether appropriate or not and he doesn’t care. What truly disgusts me is 45’s crazy […]

CRAZY IS AS CRAZY DOES

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I wondered why 45 & his supporters were particularly crazy this week with his COVID-19 timeline fake news updates and his supporters “no mask” demonstrations to reopen or “liberate” the USA for business. Now I know why the crazies got crazier this week. I just watched Obama’s supportive message for VP Biden bid for president. I believe Obama’s message of empathy and kindness for all Americans during this crisis, drove 45 & his crazies even crazier this. Enough said! WHY I WROTE: LOVE THE 1 YOU’RE WITH?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
For quite some time, I’d wanted to write about homelessness and love. About eighteen years ago on Labor Day, my son and my girlfriends and I were on the way to Wildwood New Jersey to spend time in an amusement park we’d all heard about. My son and I walked up two blocks to meet everybody at a central meeting point. We waited for about twenty minutes before my girlfriends drove up in a van and another car. We were still waiting for the last friend to arrive, when I noticed two men coming towards us who looked scruffy as if they hadn’t seen a laundromat or a bathtub recently. They stopped several times before they reached us to beg other folks on the block for money. Most folks chased them away with a cuss word or two. At first, I thought they might be going to the nearby walk-in, mental health clinic. When I saw the two men begging for money, I knew they would be asking us for money too. I was annoyed because both men while looking dirty and disheveled, weren’t drunk and didn’t seem mentally ill. My first thoughts were the two men looked healthy enough […]

SOUND ADVICE IN TRYING TIMES

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I was reviewing some old posts and found this one from two years ago. I believe it is still appropriate for today’s times too. It’s simple. Sometimes less complicated is the best way to go. My sister sent me this message several months ago, when I was feeling low down and a bit helpless. I loved it so much I decided to pass it on. Thanks Sis. My only comment, I would add some additional suggestions to Number 9. If you can’t show up and be counted because of limitations, you can still do something. Call your representatives like I did or email them or write to them like I did. All of that works too. The point is to do something positive. Don’t stay in your own little bubble world and complain about how bad things are if you aren’t willing to do more than complain. Read the rest of the advice below. It needs no further explanation. From a friend’s page. Sound advice for the times. This is also going around and for good reason: 1. Don’t use his name. 2. Remember this is a regime and he’s not acting alone. 3. Do not belittle those who support […]

WADE IN THE WATERS

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’m not one for religious symbolism but the more I hear about foreign involvement in our democratic election system, I keep thinking of a song I used to hear in church Sunday mornings. I was a kid back then. Everybody knows Baby boomer children couldn’t say. “Mom, Dad I’m not going to church. It’s Sunday morning. I think I just sit this visit out. I don’t like how that old guy wearing that long robe talks to us. He’s always screaming about devils and doing bad stuff from that platform he stands on. You and Dad might like him; but he scares the mess out of me. Today, I’ll just sit home and do something that makes me happy. Watching Sunday morning cartoons makes me happy and so I’ll be doing that today, okay? I’ll see you both when you get back from church if I’m not napping, right?” No way was that going to fly with my parents back then. In the only thing flying, would be my butt into next week. That would be after I was released from the children’s ward of the hospital, my father’s opened can of whup my backside sent me. But I digress. […]

WHY I WROTE: DUTCH CHOCOLATE1, The Vice President is missing

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Years ago, long before the girl power, Black Girl Magic and the Me-Too movements, I watched Angela Jolie in the movie Laura Croft Tomb Raider. I was in love with movies again. I thought. Wow! Finally, an attractive woman in a lead role where she carries everything. She played the role of an adventurer, normally inhabited by a man. Think Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series or Nicholas Cage in the National Treasure series, both men played adventurer roles. Their movies were quite popular with moviegoers. While watching Tomb Raider, years later, I thought to myself. How come there aren’t more action movies like this with women or minorities in main roles? Why aren’t they the stars of show? Is it because nobody would pay to see movies like this? Then I thought. I’d go see it. I bet I could find plenty of other folks would too. Wonder Woman made to the movies and even Oprah was impressed enough to sponsor the ultimate “Wonder Woman themed party. While I liked the idea of a powerful, heroic female star, something was still missing. I didn’t see me when I watched WW. When Marvel brought Luke Cage to Netflix and […]

THE END OF NICE & the cost of progress?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I was leaving my apartment to go outside. I live in the Big Apple on the top floor in an elevated building. I have an amazing view of the New Jersey shoreline, the George Washington Bridge and beyond to the Palisades. And of course, I can see freight ships, tugboats and the occasional pleasure craft on the Hudson River moving both south and north from my window. Anyway, the elevator stopped one floor below me to pick up passengers. Three young men stepped on the elevator and nodded at me. They looked to be in their early twenties. Two of the men were engaged in a conversation while the third was into his cellphone, poking and swiping and staring at the screen. The other two young men stopped talking to pull out their cell phones to do the same thing. This wasn’t the first time I’d ridden from the top floor to the first floor in nearly total silence with my new neighbors. I say new neighbors because my building along with hundreds of buildings in my Hamilton Heights neighborhood are undergoing substantial changes. It’s not so much the new construction as the reimagining of my neighborhoods that I see. […]

ACTIVISTS: WHO IS KENDALL JENNER ANYWAY?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I had time to waste so I was roaming the internet, looking at random videos. I finally saw the famous Pepsi commercial starring the one and the only Kendall Jenner who is part of the Kardashian clan. I started thinking about what it means to be an activist. When I was around Kendall’s age, I was sophomore at Ohio State University. I volunteered to help the Robert Kennedy campaign for president at Ohio State University. I believed in the things he said he would do for young people, old people, poor people, Black, Brown, and white people. Mainly, I thought he would get us out of the Viet Nam War. Along with multitudes of other young people, I went on trips across America to encourage people to register and vote in the presidential primary and then the election in November 1968. The people I met during the campaign lived in tarpaper shacks with tin roofs. I couldn’t believe that in 1968, people lived in the kind of housing I’d only seen in history books 100 years ago. The things I saw led me to believe America was great for some people. For most poor people, living in America was sheer […]
