DUTCH CHOCOLATE 2: JUDGE YE NOT

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In Dutch Chocolate 2: Judge Ye Not, a series of complications plague Judge Roy MacKay’s courtroom. He’s the sitting judge on an important criminal case against one of the world’s major drug kingpins, nicknamed El Jefe.  The judge and his courtroom staff have suffered through several bomb threats, armed guards and personal bodyguards, a courtroom filled with cameras, reporter wannabees, official reporters, and so many court watchers, daily seating lotteries are conducted before court begins. The jury finds El Jefe guilty on all counts. Now the judge must sentence the drug kingpin in eighteen days. Unfortunately, his daughter has been kidnapped to make sure he releases El Jefe. Judge MacKay hires Dutch to rescue his daughter. Now Dutch is racing against the clock. She has less than eighteen days to find the judge’s daughter and install her in a safe house before El Jefe’s minions deliver her to a fate worse than death. Can Dutch rescue the young hostage and keep everyone she holds dear safe? Dutch Chocolate 2: Judge Ye Not:  Available for pre-order 11/23/20. Why I wrote Dutch Chocolate5: Somebody To Love Me

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Years ago, long before the girl power, Black Girl Magic and the Me-Too movements, I watched Angela Jolie in the movie Laura Croft Tomb Raider. I was in love with movies again. I thought. Wow! Finally, an attractive woman in a lead role where she carries everything. She played the role of an adventurer, normally inhabited by a man. Think Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series or Nicholas Cage in the National Treasure series, both men played adventurer roles. Their movies were quite popular with moviegoers. I decided I’d write a series of books about a Black lesbian with code name Dutch Chocolate. She has a background in NYPD as a sergeant in East Harlem, before joining the army and going to the Middle East to work in Intel. She returns to work in one of NYPD’s specialized street crime units. Dutch eventually decides to become a PI working for her people in Harlem. Over the years, she attracts a group of law enforcement misfits who have become her loyal crew and family. Dutch Chocolate stories include them as well. In the fifth action novel of the series, FBI Undercover Agent Zita Fernandez has been depressed since her Aunt […]

WHAT BLACK HISTORY MONTH MEANS TO ME

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I read an article in a recent Southern Poverty Law Center1 newsletter that mentioned a survey SPLC2 conducted targeting approximately 1000 senior high schooler’s knowledge about American slavery. The SPLC survey also involved social studies teachers and reviewed the history textbooks they used. This is what the survey found. Would you believe only 8% of the high school seniors surveyed could identify slavery as the central cause of the Civil War? It gets worse. The Washington Post read the same survey and summarized it by saying this: 68% of the students didn’t known slavery was formally ended by a Constitutional amendment. 22% of the students could identify how provisions in the Constitution gave advantages to slaver holders. 44% students knew that slavery was legal in all colonies during the American revolution. The survey also evaluated ten popular history textbooks. Even the best history textbook score was 70 points out of 100 points based on a rubric of what should be in a history book about American slavery. The remaining textbooks accumulated 46 points out of 100 points. Why am I telling you all this when Black History Month is half over? 1 I donate to Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) […]

LOVER’S DAY RANT

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Contacting, our marriage counselor, was something I felt I had to do. I figured I should speak with him because I needed to know if my lover directly or indirectly mentioned his assault plans during any of his one-on-sessions with our counselor. My lover had stopped attending our joint and his individual sessions with the counselor two weeks before the assault. I figured our counselor owed me the truth because I was still his patient, while my lover wasn’t so I called him. He claimed that he couldn’t betray my lover’s confidence to confirm or deny my suspicions. I stopped attending his sessions after that phone call. I missed my lover at night when I was feeling particularly lonesome and didn’t have a warm body to snuggle against. I shared a ten-year history with the man; but it was certainly over now. My lover saw to that the minute he let his fists do the talking for his heart. I’d like to tell you that I’ve found the most wonderful person in the world and that we’re happy, as hell living together but I can’t. I had a series of bad relationships after my first lover. Although none were violent, […]

WHY I WROTE: SANTA BABY, Two studs & baby makes three

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve always liked the movie Three Men & A Baby. The premise of the movie is this. Three handsome single womanizing men who are confirmed bachelors find a baby girl left on their doorstep. The men are thrown into a tizzy. They don’t know which one of them is father or if one of them is the father. They don’t know how to change a diaper let alone how feed and care for a baby girl who can’t walk or talk yet. Each man learns what the baby girl’s cries mean. They must learn how to change diapers. How to feed her. How to bath her. How to buy and dress her in baby clothes. And how to entertain the baby girl and stop her cries. By the time the mother returns to claim the child, all three men don’t want the little girl to leave. They have fallen in love with the little girl. They want to raise her as their own child. Once the one of the men admits he’s the father, the remaining two men convince the mother to move in with them so they can raise the child together. I always thought the story idea would […]

I THOUGHT I KNEW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I thought I knew what happens when we die. After all, I was familiar with death, since I’d experienced it at a young age. I was around eleven years old when my grandmother died at seventy-nine. The medical examiner’s records said she died of a heart attack, cardiac arrest. The report didn’t say that my grandmother was the main speaker at a church sisters’ meeting. The topic was Africa. As she was speaking at the front of the church, she felt funny. The sisters told my mother how my grandmother grabbed her chest and told the closest sister she needed to rest because she felt so tired. She managed to sit down in one of the front pews, never to rise again. So yes, I thought I knew death. When I was twelve, I bought a puppy from the local dog pound with five dollars I’d found fluttering the breeze, finally landing on a dirt should of a main road. My kid brother, big sister, and I were walking home from the library. It was the best five-dollar gift I’d ever spent on me. I called the puppy Lady, named after the female dog in Disney’s movie Lady & The […]
