DECEMBER OF SORROWS

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve been thinking a lot about God lately. Unlike earlier this year, this time I know why. Permit me to explain as best I can. Towards the end of December, is said to be the birth date of God’s son Jesus. It’s a wonderful time for amazing celebrations of his birth to a relatively poor couple. His foster father Joseph was an unemployed carpenter and his birth mother Mary was a simple housewife. For me and my family December has been a month of deep sorrow and regret. My father died on December 29, 2001. My sister only two years older than me, died in the early morning on December 12, 2017. I miss them both so much and wish they were both still here. At times, it’s difficult for me to celebrate Christmas or New Year’s Eve with their deaths hanging over my head like a permanent dark mistletoe. I try to remember with a great deal of fondness, celebrating Christmas when I was a child and now missing family members were alive and well. Back then, my mother loved this time of year. She hung ribbons full of hundreds of Christmas cards in the hallway by the front […]

SANTA BABY: Two studs & baby makes three

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In Book 8 of the Forever Woman series, normally cool, calm, and collected Percy Burnette is in trouble. Her life is falling apart. After she assaulted one of her best friends and shot her ex-fiancée, she is losing control of her world. All she feels is a burning rage. She has no idea where it’s coming from or how to stop her negative behavior toward people that she thought she loved. While awaiting arraignment within the city’s correction system, she has a one-night stand with her cellmate, a woman she’s known for less than 24 hours. Before entering the corrections system, she conducts an affair with her arresting officer, Detective Mary Bethune (MB) Collins. Now Percy has done her time in the corrections system. She suspects MB of cheating with one of the rookie detectives she’s required to train. However, MB is not playing around. MB is falling in love with Percy but doesn’t know how to tell her. They had agreed at the beginning of the relationship they were in it for companionship and safe sex. Percy means more than that and MB wants to show her with a special gift of love. Will Percy accept this life-changing gift, […]

WHY I WROTE: SANTA BABY, Two studs & baby makes three

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve always liked the movie Three Men & A Baby. The premise of the movie is this. Three handsome single womanizing men who are confirmed bachelors find a baby girl left on their doorstep. The men are thrown into a tizzy. They don’t know which one of them is father or if one of them is the father. They don’t know how to change a diaper let alone how feed and care for a baby girl who can’t walk or talk yet. Each man learns what the baby girl’s cries mean. They must learn how to change diapers. How to feed her. How to bath her. How to buy and dress her in baby clothes. And how to entertain the baby girl and stop her cries. By the time the mother returns to claim the child, all three men don’t want the little girl to leave. They have fallen in love with the little girl. They want to raise her as their own child. Once the one of the men admits he’s the father, the remaining two men convince the mother to move in with them so they can raise the child together. I always thought the story idea would […]

I THOUGHT I KNEW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I thought I knew what happens when we die. After all, I was familiar with death, since I’d experienced it at a young age. I was around eleven years old when my grandmother died at seventy-nine. The medical examiner’s records said she died of a heart attack, cardiac arrest. The report didn’t say that my grandmother was the main speaker at a church sisters’ meeting. The topic was Africa. As she was speaking at the front of the church, she felt funny. The sisters told my mother how my grandmother grabbed her chest and told the closest sister she needed to rest because she felt so tired. She managed to sit down in one of the front pews, never to rise again. So yes, I thought I knew death. When I was twelve, I bought a puppy from the local dog pound with five dollars I’d found fluttering the breeze, finally landing on a dirt should of a main road. My kid brother, big sister, and I were walking home from the library. It was the best five-dollar gift I’d ever spent on me. I called the puppy Lady, named after the female dog in Disney’s movie Lady & The […]

WHY I WROTE: CAN TRUE LOVE COME TWICE IN A LIFETIME?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I wanted to write a book about woman discovers a woman who looks exactly like her dead wife. How would she react? The woman, wealthy realtor, Amelia Roberts grows curious about her dead wife’s body double and follows her. She learns the woman Brett Mc Kinsey works as an art restorer for a small firm. Unbeknown to Brett, her employer is going bankrupt. Brett will be losing her job and her health insurance in 6 months. Only the owners know the issue and have not told their employees. Amelia continues to spy on Brett, hoping to find a way to help her. Amelia wonders if finding her dead wife’s look-alike is a good thing for her? Can she see Brett Mc Kinsey for who she really is and accept her for being different than her dead wife, Ruby? One night, Amelia manages rescue Brett from a fall in the street and the result is a broken ankle. Amelia now has an excuse to bring Brett home and does. Amelia is a true control freak, ignores Brett’s protests about invading her privacy. She uses her medical friends to reset Brett’s broken ankle and examine the baby growing inside her. She finds […]

IT’S HALLOWEEN & MY 8th ANNIVERSARY, TOO!

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I caught the writing bug but I needed to find my voice. I needed to write better since I kept getting pesky rejection letters from publishers I admired. I had shoe boxes filled with them. I did what most writers do. I went back to school. I enrolled in courses at the New School, the 92nd Street Y and Gotham Writer’s Workshop. I joined several writing groups as well. By then I had quite a portfolio of short stories, novels, novellas and even a workplace memoir. When my first publishing deal didn’t work out, it took me eight years to finally decide maybe I could become my own publisher. By then there were all kinds of helpful free publishing services such as Amazon’s Kindle and Createspace, Nook, Kobo and Apple’s IBooks. I decided to self-publish at a perfect time. I was leaving my job of 40 years in July of 2014. I couldn’t sit at home all day twiddling my thumbs all day. I needed to do something to fill my time. I tried volunteering. I did it for six or seven months; but I needed something more to fill my heart and my soul. I decided to publish my […]

THE GOD THING

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve been thinking a lot about God lately. I’m not sure exactly why, but I’ve been doing it. For example, two weeks ago, I went out to move my car from one side of the street to the other side. In New York City, we have something called Alternate Side of the Street Parking. Particularly in Manhattan, good legal parking spots are worth a car’s weight in gold. Even bad illegal spots are worth something until the traffic agents or the police discover them. Depending on the side of the street, the day of the week, and time of day, a car has to be moved or the owner risks a ticket, a tow, or both. I saw two older Black women in long-sleeved dresses that almost touched their ankles crossing the street as I double-parked. I immediately thought of old-school church sisters. The only thing the two sisters were missing were their Sunday-go-to-meeting church hats. They did carry copies of their religious booklets, face-out against their chests as if the papers could shield them against the sinning world they were entering. I watched the two women for a long while. They both took bench seats in the park across […]
