IRONIC ISN’T IT?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I wrote this a while ago in 2017. It still fits today. Although some folks don’t want to remember these things this way, they did happen. Lately, as I’ve been watching the news, an old song has been running through my mind. Actually, it’s two old-school songs I’ve been hearing in my head. The first one is “Back Stabbers,” which came out in 1972. It was sung the O’Jays and written by Leon Huff, Gene Mcfadden, and John Whitehead. The second one song is newer. “Ironic” came out in 1995. It was written by Glen Ballard and Alanis Morrissette and sung by Alanis Morrissette. Due to copyright laws, I can’t include the lyrics to either song here. I can summarize them. You’ve probably guessed “Back Stabbers” tells a story about a man discovering how much his friends aren’t really his friends. How his friends smile in his face but stab him in the back the first chance they get. His friends want to take his place at work on his job and at home with his woman. His friends do all it by sneaking behind his back. They never confront him. They do sneak attacks and thus he see them […]

THE GOD THING

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’ve been thinking a lot about God lately. I’m not sure exactly why, but I’ve been doing it. For example, two weeks ago, I went out to move my car from one side of the street to the other side. In New York City, we have something called Alternate Side of the Street Parking. Particularly in Manhattan, good legal parking spots are worth a car’s weight in gold. Even bad illegal spots are worth something until the traffic agents or the police discover them. Depending on the side of the street, the day of the week, and time of day, a car has to be moved or the owner risks a ticket, a tow, or both. I saw two older Black women in long-sleeved dresses that almost touched their ankles crossing the street as I double-parked. I immediately thought of old-school church sisters. The only thing the two sisters were missing were their Sunday-go-to-meeting church hats. They did carry copies of their religious booklets, face-out against their chests as if the papers could shield them against the sinning world they were entering. I watched the two women for a long while. They both took bench seats in the park across […]

Why I wrote: I Wanna Get Next To You

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In my series Forever Woman, I introduced a character Miss Nonni in Ferrelli’s Restaurant which was Volume 5. She was the elegant older woman who dispensed wisdom and sage advice to the rest of the women who inhabited the series. She was also the grandmother who raised Maria Ferrelli the current owner of the restaurant. While the reader learned she spoke a blend of Italian. She was born and raised in Sicily. She understood English but spoke a rudimentary form of it, leaving out adverbs and adjectives and sometimes even verbs. In the beginning, when I first added Miss Nonni, she seemed to float into a room make her pronouncements and predictions then leave almost like a spirit ghost. She was very elegant with her stark white curly hair almost arranged like a halo. She had an arrow straight posture that hopefully reminding readers of an ivory queen. When she extended a hand to touch people’s hearts, she seemed to read their deeply buried emotions. Later on, in future books, Miss Nonni liked to do interesting things. She drove a family bread truck in Sicily. She loved to garden. Her family grew its own herbs and vegetables in the old […]

RIB BONES & MY FATHER

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
That’s a photo of my father in 1953 when we lived on Douglas Street which no longer exist as I knew it back then. My mother likes to tell two stories about me. One shows or purports to show how creative with the truth I was at a young age. As for the second of my mother’s tales, I’ll save that one for another time. I think I was five at the time. Apparently, we—meaning my parents, my sister who was seven, my brother who was three and I were enjoying one of my favorite dinner meals. We were seated around the dinner table in the dining room of our old house on Douglas Street. I should say right now, I don’t remember experiencing this tale myself, but I’ve heard the story so often, I could tell it in my sleep. Knowing my mother, the home economics teacher, believed in balanced meals, I’m sure we had string beans, a green salad, a starch—baked potatoes or something like it, meat or fish, milk for us kids and coffee for her and my father. My parents believed social graces at the dinner table. That usually meant my father would ask my mother […]

OUT AT 47

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I was forty-seven years old before I finally admitted to me that I was gay and then I admitted it to my family. Question: Isn’t 47 a little old to discover one’s orientation? Shouldn’t a person know before they reach 30 who or what they like? At 47, a person has lived over half her life in the shadows and maybe with the wrong gender as well. How’s a major life change possible at that age? Permit me to explain my situation. I’m a Baby Boomer. When I grew up, young women were just beginning to flex their muscles. They were thinking about working in non-traditional jobs and considered living non-traditional lives. Most of the women I knew when I was a kid wore traditional clothes to represent their by-the-book lives. Frilly blouses, below-the-knee donut skirts, tailored shirtwaist dresses, and A-line dresses were garb of that day. I rarely saw pants or slacks on my mother’s friends and only boys wore jeans. My mother and her friends allowed daughters like me to wear dressy dresses several inches below the knee with heels at sixteen. On very special occasions, we daughters wore lipstick, a little blush for our cheeks, eye shadow, […]

The Phantom, with the newborn in his arms, escapes, but an off-duty policewoman, Lieutenant Agatha Crist, grabs the baby from him. The baby is returned to the mother and the policewoman is hailed as a hero for rescuing the child. Agatha soon finds out that Dr. Jimson happens to be her fraternal twin. They were supposed to meet for the first time to end their lifelong estrangement. Agatha is distraught and insists on being part of the murder investigation team, despite her captain’s objections. As the investigation proceeds, it becomes clear the lieutenant needs as much protection as the new mother.
