WHY I WROTE: Dutch Chocolate3; Blood Lust

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Years ago, long before the girl power, Black Girl Magic and the Me-Too movements, I watched Angela Jolie in the movie Laura Croft Tomb Raider. I was in love with movies again. I thought. Wow! Finally, an attractive woman in a lead role where she carries everything. She played the role of an adventurer, normally inhabited by a man. Think Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series or Nicholas Cage in the National Treasure series, both men played adventurer roles. Their movies were quite popular with moviegoers. While watching Tomb Raider again, years later, I thought to myself. How come there aren’t more action movies like this with women or minorities in main roles. Why aren’t they the stars of show? Is it because nobody would pay to see movies like this? I’d go see it. I bet I could find plenty of other folks would too. When Marvel brought Luke Cage to Netflix and it was so popular, I thought yay! Finally, a handsome Black man was starring in an adventure series that was popular enough to warrant a second-year renewal. Black Panther sealed the deal. It drew international appeal and acclaim as third most watched and popular movies […]

DUTCH CHOCOLATE3; Blood Lust

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In the third action novel of the Dutch Chocolate series, it’s been four years since VP Judith Kerson’s death and Yolanda Riggins, aka Dutch Chocolate, still has a hole in her heart. After an incident with a bear, Dutch goes upstate to check on her cousin and her family. While deciding how to handle the possibility the bear’s mate will go on a rampage, Dutch meets the game warden, a somewhat strange woman, examining the dead male bear. The bear’s mate attacks Dutch and the game warden, but luckily, Dutch’s co-workers kill the female bear in mid-attack. The game warden, Linda Whitehawk, introduces Dutch to the world of poaching, trading and killing illegal exotic game for money that is happening in her own back yard. Linda is a staunch conservationist and finds herself tempering Dutch’s impulsive instinct to hunt the bears and poachers alike to protect her family, and the two bump heads. However, Dutch’s family and friends see love in the air between the pair of opposites. Will Dutch and Linda have a meeting of the minds or will their differences in ideology drive them apart? Find out in Dutch Chocolate3: Blood Lust. Available for pre-order 2/10/21. The release […]

In Dutch Chocolate 2: Judge Ye Not, a series of complications plague Judge Roy MacKay’s courtroom. He’s the sitting judge on an important criminal case against one of the world’s major drug kingpins, nicknamed El Jefe.  The judge and his courtroom staff have suffered through several bomb threats, armed guards and personal bodyguards, a courtroom filled with cameras, reporter wannabees, official reporters, and so many court watchers, daily seating lotteries are conducted before court begins. The jury finds El Jefe guilty on all counts. Now the judge must sentence the drug kingpin in eighteen days. Unfortunately, his daughter has been kidnapped to make sure he releases El Jefe. Judge MacKay hires Dutch to rescue his daughter. Now Dutch is racing against the clock. She has less than eighteen days to find the judge’s daughter and install her in a safe house before El Jefe’s minions deliver her to a fate worse than death. Can Dutch rescue the young hostage and keep everyone she holds dear safe? Dutch Chocolate 2: Judge Ye Not:  Available for pre-order 11/23/20. DUTCH CHOCOLATE1, The Vice President is missing

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
A chance meeting in a public school bathroom rekindles old feelings in PI Yolanda “Dutch” Riggins for her former college friend Judith Kerson. Forbidden to Dutch twenty years ago, as Vice President of the United States, Judith is now completely taboo. Regardless, the two make a tentative dinner date, but fate intervenes and Judith goes missing. With one Secret Service person killed and another in critical condition, witnesses are scarce and Dutch and her crew take up the reins of the investigation. Why would anyone abduct the Vice President? Is it for money, fame, or something more sinister? Whatever the reason, it is up to Dutch to find her old friend in the first novel of the action-packed, suspenseful Dutch Chocolate Series: Dutch Chocolate1: The Vice President is Missing. Available now on Amazon and Smashwords! Congresswoman

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Here’s my second participant in honor of Women’s History Month. As I mentioned previously, I wanted to introduce readers to women that might not be in the typical history books. I always liked to hear this particular woman speak. Her voice was deep, throaty and soothing. I thought of her as a true orator. She held the country spellbound during the Nixon impeachment hearings when she reminded her fellow congress people why the president could and should be impeached for covering-up the infamous Watergate activities. Listening to her during the televised hearings, I wondered who was that woman? Why hadn’t I heard about her before? Like Congresswoman Chisholm, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan was a woman with a series of “firsts” in her background. I will briefly outline them here because we should all know about her. Knowledge is power. In 1972, along with Andrew Young, they were the first two African Americans to be elected to congress from the deep south since 1898. Prior to becoming a congressperson, she was the first African American woman to win a Texas State Senate seat in 1966, after losing twice in 1962 and 1964. She was the first African American to win a Texas […]

“UNBOSSED AND UNBOUGHT”

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In honor of Women’s History Month, once again I’m using some of that research I dug up and didn’t use for the first post. As I mentioned before, I wanted to introduce readers to women that might not be in the typical history books. This next woman was a series of firsts which she asked not to be remembered for when she died. I’m going to go down the list of her firsts anyway because knowledge is power. We should all know about her. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman to run for congress and win. In 1968, she won a seat in congress representing the 12th District in Brooklyn. She represented her district from 1969 to 1983. She was also the first woman of Caribbean to win a seat in congress. Her mother was born in Barbados. Her father was from British Guiana. Four years later in 1972, she was the first person of African American descent to run for nomination in a major party for president of the United States. She was also the first woman to run for president of the United States from the Democratic party. She served as a role model for many […]

Ain’t I Woman?

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In honor of Women’s History Month, I’m introducing readers to women not easily found in history books. I hope you find her words as inspiring as I did. Abolitionist, Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was enslaved until she escaped in 1826. She devoted the rest of her life to speaking out against slavery and for equal rights for women. She helped free and formerly enslaved Blacks, relocate to western states. Here’s what she had to say in 1851, delivering a speech entitled “Ain’t I A Woman” in Akron Ohio at a Women’s Conference. “Well, children, where there is so much racket there must be something out of kilter. I think that ‘twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what’s all this here talking about? That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain’t I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered […]

THE GUARDIAN & HER CAPTAIN, Agatha & Bonnie, a story of hate and love

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In The Guardian & Her Captain…, Dr. Sophie Jimson delivers a young woman’s baby in the rear of a taxi. Shortly after, the doctor is murdered by a phantom man that witnesses can’t describe. The Phantom, with the newborn in his arms, escapes, but an off-duty policewoman, Lieutenant Agatha Crist, grabs the baby from him. The baby is returned to the mother and the policewoman is hailed as a hero for rescuing the child. Agatha soon finds out that Dr. Jimson happens to be her fraternal twin. They were supposed to meet for the first time to end their lifelong estrangement. Agatha is distraught and insists on being part of the murder investigation team, despite her captain’s objections. As the investigation proceeds, it becomes clear the lieutenant needs as much protection as the new mother. The lieutenant’s supervisor, Captain Bonnie Smyth, steps into the case to protect both women. As the two women bump heads, sparks fly. Will they fall in love or continue the hatred they’ve been exposed to for generations? ASIN: B08D3WLFZ8 (Kindle Version $2.99) ASIN: B08CMF2CSR (Print Version $11.99) The Guardian & Her Captain: Agatha & Bonnie, a story of hate and love, (Jimson Murders Volume1), is […]
