WADE IN THE WATERS

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I’m not one for religious symbolism but the more I hear about foreign involvement in our democratic election system, I keep thinking of a song I used to hear in church Sunday mornings. I was a kid back then. Everybody knows Baby boomer children couldn’t say. “Mom, Dad I’m not going to church. It’s Sunday morning. I think I just sit this visit out. I don’t like how that old guy wearing that long robe talks to us. He’s always screaming about devils and doing bad stuff from that platform he stands on. You and Dad might like him; but he scares the mess out of me. Today, I’ll just sit home and do something that makes me happy. Watching Sunday morning cartoons makes me happy and so I’ll be doing that today, okay? I’ll see you both when you get back from church if I’m not napping, right?” No way was that going to fly with my parents back then. In the only thing flying, would be my butt into next week. That would be after I was released from the children’s ward of the hospital, my father’s opened can of whup my backside sent me. But I digress. […]

SOUND ADVICE IN TRYING TIMES

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
I was reviewing some old posts and found this one from two years ago. I believe it is still appropriate for today’s times too. It’s simple. Sometimes less complicated is the best way to go. My sister sent me this message several months ago, when I was feeling low down and a bit helpless. I loved it so much I decided to pass it on. Thanks Sis. My only comment, I would add some additional suggestions to Number 9. If you can’t show up and be counted because of limitations, you can still do something. Call your representatives like I did or email them or write to them like I did. All of that works too. The point is to do something positive. Don’t stay in your own little bubble world and complain about how bad things are if you aren’t willing to do more than complain. Read the rest of the advice below. It needs no further explanation. From a friend’s page. Sound advice for the times. This is also going around and for good reason: 1. Don’t use his name. 2. Remember this is a regime and he’s not acting alone. 3. Do not belittle those who support […]

Dutch Chocolate 8: It must be love. Nothing else feels this good

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In the 8th novel of the Dutch Chocolate action series, Dr. Torres and Nurse Walton first met two years ago because of an FBI Agent’s serious injuries. To Dr. Ada Torres, one of the staff shrinks at the FBI, her patients (FBI field agents) are so important, she has no love life. She devotes all her time to her patients. Whatever tiny bits of personal time are leftover, she spends advising her younger twin sisters about life. Nurse Gayle Walton has a similar problem. She was former army nurse who did her tour overseas and returned to the states to continue her nursing duties. Overseas she was devoted to her soldier patients, trying to care for their medical as well as their psychological needs. When she returned to the states it was the same thing. She has been so devoted to her patients that she has no love life either. After meeting the psychiatrist, Gayle realizes she wants more much more from her life. Now what? How will both women decide what to do with each other? Find out when you read Dutch Chocolate8: It must be love. Nothing else feels this good!   Available NOW on Kindle and Smashwords. […]

WHY I WROTE: Dutch Chocolate8: It must be love. Nothing else feels this good.

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Years ago, long before the girl power, Black Girl Magic and the Me-Too movements, I watched Angela Jolie in the movie Laura Croft Tomb Raider. I was in love with movies again. I thought. Wow! Finally, an attractive woman in a lead role where she carries everything. She played the role of an adventurer, normally inhabited by a man. Think Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones series or Nicholas Cage in the National Treasure series, both men played adventurer roles. Their movies were quite popular with moviegoers. I decided I’d write a series of books about a Black lesbian with code name Dutch Chocolate. She has a background in NYPD as a sergeant in East Harlem, before joining the army and going to the Middle East to work in Intel. She returns to work in one of NYPD’s specialized street crime units. Dutch eventually decides to become a PI working for her people in Harlem. Over the years, she attracts a group of law enforcement misfits who have become her loyal crew and family. Dutch Chocolate stories include them as well. In the 8th novel of the Dutch Chocolate action series, it’s been years since FBI Agent Zita Fernandez was […]

UNBOSSED AND UNBOUGHT

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In honor of Women’s History Month, once again I’m using some of that research I dug up and didn’t use for the first post. As I mentioned before, I wanted to introduce readers to women that might not be in the typical history books. This next woman was a series of firsts which she asked not to be remembered for when she died. I’m going to go down the list of her firsts anyway because knowledge is power. We should all know about her. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman to run for congress and win. In 1968, she won a seat in congress representing the 12th District in Brooklyn. She represented her district from 1969 to 1983. She was also the first woman of Caribbean to win a seat in congress. Her mother was born in Barbados. Her father was from British Guiana. Four years later in 1972, she was the first person of African American descent to run for nomination in a major party for president of the United States. She was also the first woman to run for president of the United States from the Democratic party. She served as a role model for many […]

Congresswoman

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
Here’s my first participant in honor of Women’s History Month. As I mentioned previously, I wanted to introduce readers to women that might not be in the typical history books. I always liked to hear this particular woman speak. Her voice was deep, throaty and soothing. I thought of her as a true orator. She held the country spellbound during the Nixon impeachment hearings when she reminded her fellow congress people why the president could and should be impeached for covering-up the infamous Watergate activities. Listening to her during the televised hearings, I wondered who was that woman? Why hadn’t I heard about her before? Like Congresswoman Chisholm, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan was a woman with a series of “firsts” in her background. I will briefly outline them here because we should all know about her. Knowledge is power. In 1972, along with Andrew Young, they were the first two African Americans to be elected to congress from the deep south since 1898. Prior to becoming a congressperson, she was the first African American woman to win a Texas State Senate seat in 1966, after losing twice in 1962 and 1964. She was the first African American to win a Texas […]

LET’S CELEBRATE WOMEN

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
When I started thinking about celebrating Women’s History Month and how to write a little something-something, I went on the internet to good old Google. I used other sources like cable, the radio, Y-tube, LinkedIn and Pinterest too. I started saving articles from the magazines and newspapers I read. Then I sorted through my book collection looking for books about women. I guess I’m old school because I still read newspapers and magazines. My book selection includes both the hardcover and paperback versions. Before long, I had amassed a collection of information about women that any researcher worth her weight in gold would love. And that was my problem. Too much information. Great if I was writing a thesis but way too much for a one-page post. Like most writers I love words. Whether they are my words or somebody else’s, I love ‘em like I birthed them. So, it’s difficult for me eliminate them entirely as good editing requires. It wasn’t long before I realized writing this article was becoming a nightmare for me. Then I did what I usually do and waited for inspiration to help me. When that didn’t work, I did the other thing I usually […]

DUTCH CHOCOLATE4: HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In my fourth novel of the Dutch Chocolate Series, a member of Dutch’s team is in serious trouble. It’s been 18 months since the bears left the farmland Dutch and her crew now jointly own. Dutch and her cousin Bonita gave each member of the crew their own piece of the farmland. Everyone but Nurse Dora Day has built a permanent home on the land they own. Dora is a true city girl. Born and raised in the city, she won’t accept the plot of land Dutch offers because her wife Mattie has no desire to move upstate to the boonies. Mattie is a physical therapist and her clients live in the city. She’s determined not to move upstate. Dora is deeply in love with Mattie and has been for sixteen years they’ve been married. She wants whatever Mattie wants which means they still live in the city. One night, Dutch receives an odd call from Dora who doesn’t sound at all like herself. Dora claims she’s in Riker’s Island hospital which is a part of the city’s corrections system. She’s charged with the murder of her wife Mattie. Dora claims she can’t remember what happened the night of her […]

Dutch Chocolate5: Somebody To Love Me

by B.L. in Other 0 comments
In the fifth book of the Dutch Chocolate series, Somebody to Love Me, FBI Undercover Agent Zita Fernandez has been depressed since her Aunt Marjorie’s murder six years ago. FBI Special Agent Marsha Sharpe, Zita’s handler, doesn’t know what to do with her. While Zita is working undercover in the field, she’s beginning to make mistakes that could end her life. Neither Special Agent Sharpe nor Agent Fernandez wants to ask for Dutch’s help. Both women are worried that this will take Dutch backwards to an uncomfortable time in her life when she was in love with Zita’s aunt. Can Zita deal with the consequences of her mistakes? More importantly, will she find love despite the setbacks she has suffered? Available now at Kindle and Smashwords.
