WHY I WROTE: Dutch Chocolate6: Shutdown or Shutout; The Pirellis’ story

In the sixth installment of the Dutch Chocolate Series, I wondered how Dutch would react to two more of her own crew members in serious trouble. This time the two super-size ex-cops also known as the Pirelli brothers whom she hired straight out of prison, are being targeted by an ultra-right hate group. The hate group was formed in prison and includes former members of law enforcement. 12 years ago, at the trial of the same hate group, murderous threats and vows to end the Pirelli brothers’ lives were made. Dutch receives a late-night call that could spell the end of the Pirellis. Dutch is on her way back to the farm upstate when she receives the Pirellis’ call for help. There no way she can make it back to the city in time to save them. She is out of options. What does she do? What do the Pirellis do? WHY PEOPLE LIE

For most of my life, I’ve been curious about something that seems to be a human phenomenon. Little kids do it. Teenagers do it. And adults do it. Even Disney characters (think Pinocchio) do it. It’s called lying. Lately I find myself wondering why people do it. Most people make such a mess of it. They tell whoppers that can so easily be uncovered. In this age of cellphone videos, body cams, social media, and information breaches, who doesn’t know your business? To me, lying seems worthless or at least more work than it’s worth. Yet people still do it. And I keeping asking myself, why do people lie? Experts Victoria Talwar and Kang Lee say that there are three types of lies. The first one is called a primary lie. This type of lie is told to hide what the teller did but fails to consider the mental state of the listener. Children as young as two and as old as four tell these kinds of lies. WHY I DON’T CELEBRATE 9-11

I’ve had this ongoing argument with myself and others throughout the years, about celebrating 9-11. I never wanted to celebrate 9-11. By celebrate, I mean treat it like a special day, a day of remembrance. I’m or I was a city worker who worked four blocks away and two blocks over from the World Trade Center’s twin towers. I went to work on that clear sunny morning. I arrived at my office a little before 8 in the morning. It was the date for the Democratic runoff for mayor, Mark Greene VS Freddie Ferrer. Who knew the beautiful day would turn ugly so fast? A friend called me. We talked as we usually did until she told me to find a television and turn it on or listen 1010 WINS. The urgency in her voice made me do it. It was the second worst decision among many that I made that day. The first one was watching the twins collapse, one after the other, a sight I haven’t been able to forget in 15 years. They looked like dominos except they fell downward and not over.
