Twins have always fascinated me. I suppose they do because I’ve wanted to be a twin. When I was a kid, I loved the idea of being able to fool adults into thinking they were speaking to one kid when they were speaking to the other one. Or pretending that the adult in question never told me whatever rule I just violated. That adult must have told my twin sister and not me. The idea of power over an adult simply because of birth, tickled me no end.
I’ve known a few set of them. Interestingly, the sets of twins I knew were both fraternal and identical. In nursey school and kindergarten, I had the distinction of being the one person besides their mother who could tell the boys apart. To me neither boy resembled the other one. I always thought of them as brothers of the same age rather than identical twins. One twin had larger eyes and funny sense of humor. While the other twin had slightly protruding teeth and was shy around me. I liked both boys. I admit to a certain weakness for the funny boy just a bit more than the shy boy. I considered them both my friends. I missed them a great deal when we moved away.
As I grew older, I wondered if female twins responded the same way as their male counterparts. I finally had a chance to find out. When I was in high school, I met a set of identical female twins. I had a chance to see first-hand how female twins acted. Like my kindergarten classmates, one twin blended into the school population. She was low-key almost shy. She was a good student who followed the rules. Meanwhile, her sister the other twin acted wild. She hung out with the bad asses. She smoked cigarettes in the girl’s bathroom. She drank beer with the boys who rode motorcycles, rolled up T-shirts sleeves to show off their muscles and wore cigarettes behind their ears.
Of course, I was going to write about my version of female twins someday I mused. The characters I wrote about in my latest novel are adult twins … two sets of them. I decided to double the trouble. I had the first set of twins who are straight laced, professional businesswomen fall for a second set of twins who are unorthodox tattoo artists who own their own tattoo parlor. Both sets of twins come from large loving families which gives them common grounds.
I had fun writing the story which sounds a little odd because it starts with a crazy murder scene and quickly devolves into a romantic drama with a touch of comedy. I hope you’ll find my novel Opposite Attractions: Do opposite really attract? an enjoyable read.
