I’ve read many books and seen movies about bad boys. How good girls, nice girls, and naïve girls love them bad, bad boys so much, they’ll do almost anything to get one and keep him. Hollywood’s version of “almost anything” usually includes the good girl deserting her lifelong girlfriends; estrangement from family members; especially estrangement her own children if she has any; and sometimes the good girl loses her job too. I decided that I wanted to explore that possibility. I also want to write about an aggressive; a top; a butch; a wild stud in other words, a bad girl character who was also gay.
I wanted to explore why a woman might label herself as an aggressive or a butch dyke or a wild stud. In other words what makes a bad girl bad. What’s her family like? Does she have siblings? If she has siblings, how does she relate to them? Are her parents alive and active in her life? Does she have any children? Does she work? What kind of job would she have? What kind of woman does she find attractive. Is the society that created her just like everybody’s else world or is it different? How is it different?
I also wanted to write about the woman who would find the bad girl image attractive. Who is that woman … good girl? What’s she like? Is she really that naïve and inexperienced or does she just like playing that role for the bad girl? What is her world like? Does she have siblings and parents? Is she engaged or married or living with somebody special. Does she have kids? What kind of job or hobby attracts her?
I started thinking about where my two main characters the bad-ass girl and proverbial good girl should meet. Would it be in a large urban area or in small town America? Since my main characters are usually Black women, it should be some place with familiar landmarks, right? How should they meet? It could be a theme like bad girl saves good girl. Good girl falls in love with bad girl rescuer then tries to change bad girl rescuer into a better bad girl or a bad girl with redeeming qualities such as a heart of gold. Or try this theme. Bad girl saves good girl and good girl goes bad. I wanted something different.
I wanted my bad girl to become even more of a bad ass. She shows how much of a bad ass she is by doing mean things to the good girl in her life. The more the good girl remains silent during the bad girl’s evilness and never complains; the more good girl’s forgiveness pushes the bad girl into doing more evilness. What happens next? Can the good girl’s goodness overwhelm my bad-ass? Does my bad-ass girl become totally irredeemable?
