In 2006, I decided to write this book about a woman, a police officer who has a case that haunts her. She’s trying to find a missing teenager. At the time I started writing the story, I hadn’t envisioned a serial set of novels. I thought my story would be about a NYPD lieutenant and her partner searching the countryside in the hope of finding a female runaway intact and unhurt.
Back then, I’d heard a little about human trafficking rings and child pornography. There had been enough cases in the news that I knew what child pornography looked like. While I’d heard of drug trafficking, I didn’t know much about human trafficking rings. I decided to do some research on human trafficking rings before I wrote more than the thirteen pages, I’d already written.
During my research, I was surprised to learn human trafficking is a world-wide phenomenon. Trafficking is not limited to young children either. Human beings with money (owners) are willing to buy other less fortunate human beings to do servant like-work, construction work, sexual work, nursing-like work, all for free once the deal has been struck.
Sometimes, the bought person takes an active role in the deal or contract and is aware of the services he or she must perform. The bought person makes the contract directly with the owner because they are desperate for the money the owner promises. Other times, the bought person is a child sold by his or her family because the family is desperate. Or the bought person or persons is kidnapped and sold in the marketplace as one might sell an inanimate object.
Whether the bought person has skills required for their new job, doesn’t matter. The moneyed person or persons (owners) simply keeps the bought person or persons indebted to them for as long as they live. In some jobs, such as sex work and construction, bought people don’t live long. Owners keep things like passports, driver’s licenses, photo ID or identifying information. If the bought person should die or get killed, only the owner (s) could identify the body which of course won’t happen because the transaction (buying or selling human beings) is illegal.
I decided to make one of my characters, Sunny York, a runaway who is hitchhiking to the city. Because she dared to have an interracial relationship with another girl, Taylor Cobb, Sunny’s classmates harass and shun them. Worst still her mother’s boyfriend, Jack Donaldson catches the two girls and wants to be included in the action. Jack sexually molests Sunny while Taylor manages to escape.
Two other characters are police officers. One the officers, Lieutenant Lauren Parker offers Sunny York a ride into the city. She’s returning to the city after a weekend of security seminars for police departments. When Sunny excepts the ride from the lieutenant, neither woman realizes this will be the last ride they will have together. The other officer is Sergeant Reginald Hawkins, the lieutenant’s very loyal partner. He would follow Lauren anywhere. He has and still does follow her anywhere.
By the time I finished writing this story, I had written four serials. I named the chapbooks after a main characters in each story. The result is Chapbook: 1Lauren’s Quartet of Love, Sunny.
