WHY I WROTE: Chapbook3: Lauren’s Quartet of Love, Martine

In 2006, I decided to write this book about a woman, a police officer who has a case that haunts her. She’s trying to find a missing teenager. At the time I started writing the story, I hadn’t envisioned a serial set of chapbooks. I thought my story would be about a NYPD lieutenant and her partner searching the countryside in the hope of finding a female runaway alive and unhurt. I decided to make another one of my main characters, a third police officer named Martine Sanchez. Lauren’s search for Taylor Cobb which began in upstate New York and takes them along the I-95 corridor heading southwest and ends in New Mexico. She and Reggie sense Taylor is somewhere in New Mexico, they just need a little help in finding her. One of Reggie’s contacts suggests reaching out to the NM police department and a sergeant who works there. Martine Sanchez is an ambitious sergeant with New Mexico police force who wants to be sheriff before she turns forty. In the aftermath of the brutal crime, the dead hitchhiker’s girlfriend, Taylor Cobb, runs away. Her hometown shuns her for giving testimony against the murdering rapist. In 2006, I decided to write this book about a woman, a police officer who has a case that haunts her. She’s trying to find a missing teenager. At the time I started writing the story, I hadn’t envisioned a serial set of chapbooks. I thought my story would be about a NYPD lieutenant and her partner searching the countryside in the hope of finding a female runaway alive and unhurt. I decided to make another one of my characters ambitious ADA, Althea Cosmo. She meets Lieutenant Parker when she’s called away from a date to handle Sunny’s case which soon becomes a murder case upon Sunny’s death. Sunny’s murder case branches off into an assault case against the lieutenant when she loses her mind and tries to beat Jack Donaldson to death with her fists. While arresting the lieutenant, two deputies injure Lauren far worse than what she does to Donaldson. By the time the lieutenant’s broken bones heal, she’s lost her pride, her gun, her badge and the 17-year job she loves so much. She’s spent the past 12 months under house arrest at Althea’s place. 104 YEARS OLD. She’s over a century.

I don’t normally do five essays in a month. I also don’t dedicate any of them to somebody, either. This month, I decided to change what I normally do and make an exception. I wrote this four years ago to celebrate my mother’s birthday. Now I’m sending it I out again because my mother went home four days ago at the age of 104 and I wanted to celebrate her life. She didn’t do Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook Instagram or Snapchat so she’d never read this tribute. I thought I should do something special online for her, sort of a permanent digital record that she existed on this earth for the last 104 years. I read somewhere that the number of folks over 100 isn’t so rare nowadays and the number of centenarians is increasing. Try as I might, I can’t imagine what she’s seen during her lifetime. I know she missed WWI but lived through the depression. She spoke about how she and my aunt sold bread and cookies from a wagon. My stepfather lost a janitor job during the depression but tried to make up for it by setting a home bakery because he loved to bake. My mother […]

lost her pride, her gun, her badge and the 17-year job she loves so much. She’s spent the past 12 months under house arrest at Althea’s place. She’s been sentenced to perform community service and attended anger management classes. She’s paid Jack Donaldson medical bills. On the bright side she’s developed somewhat of a romantic relationship with Althea; deep affection for her dog Eddie and the old man Lucas Daily, her next-door neighbor. When Lauren hears Taylor Cobb ran way, she decides she must find her. Reggie joins her. Their search for Taylor begins in upstate New York in her hometown of Lorraine. The search takes them along the I-95 corridor of New York and New Jersey, heading southwest and ends in New Mexico. Along the way, the officers undergo as many changes as the victims. By the time I finished writing this story, I had written four serials. I named the chapbooks after a main characters in each story. The result is Chapbook2: Lauren’s Quartet of Love, Althea. In 2006, I decided to write this book about a woman, a police officer who has a case that haunts her. She’s trying to find a missing teenager. At the time I started writing the story, I hadn’t envisioned a serial set of novels. I thought my story would be about a NYPD lieutenant and her partner searching the countryside in the hope of finding a female runaway intact and unhurt. Back then, I’d heard a little about human trafficking rings and child pornography. There had been enough cases in the news that I knew what child pornography looked like. While I’d heard of drug trafficking, I didn’t know much about human trafficking rings. I decided to do some research on human trafficking rings before I wrote more than the thirteen pages, I’d already written. During my research, I was surprised to learn human trafficking is a world-wide phenomenon. Trafficking is not limited to young children either. Human beings with money (owners) are willing to buy other less fortunate human beings to do servant like-work, construction work, sexual work, nursing-like work, all for free once the deal has been struck.
